Before it was Arlington, this was Menotomy, a farming village settled in 1635 that became the town of West Cambridge in 1807 and took its present name in 1867. On April 19, 1775, British troops retreating from Concord fought their way through Menotomy, and about half of the Americans killed that day died here. The Jason Russell House, where twelve Americans died, still stands just off Massachusetts Avenue with bullet holes in its walls.
Massachusetts Avenue climbs through town from the Cambridge line, passing three business districts. East Arlington has the Capitol Theatre, Arlington Center has the Regent Theatre and the Robbins Library, and Arlington Heights sits higher up toward Lexington. The Minuteman Bikeway runs parallel on the old rail bed, so many trips to Alewife or the town center happen by bike or on foot. Spy Pond, the Mystic Lakes and Menotomy Rocks Park, with Hill's Pond and its glacial ledges, give the town plenty of water and woods.
There is no subway station inside Arlington, so transit depends on location. East Arlington is close to Alewife on the Red Line, while the 77 bus covers Mass Ave all the way to Harvard Square. Homes near Mass Ave or the Bikeway generally make car-free commuting simplest.

Minuteman Bikeway
The paved rail trail runs from Alewife through East Arlington, Arlington Center and the Heights before continuing on to Lexington and Bedford.
Spy Pond
The large pond beside Arlington Center has Spy Pond Park on its shore and a stretch of the Bikeway along its northern edge.
Robbins Farm Park
A hilltop park with a playground, ball field and a sweeping view of the Boston skyline, a popular spot for watching Fourth of July fireworks.
Revolutionary history
The Jason Russell House and the Old Schwamb Mill preserve Menotomy's past, and the 1775 battle route follows Mass Ave through town.

Arlington homes & real estate
Arlington's housing mix follows its geography. East Arlington, closest to Cambridge, is filled with two-family houses, many of them stacked up-down units built in the early 20th century, along with smaller single-families. Around Arlington Center and on the slopes of Jason Heights and the Heights you'll see more Colonial, Victorian and Colonial Revival single-families, some on larger, hillier lots. Apartment buildings and condos line parts of Massachusetts Avenue, and a good share of the two-families have been converted to two-unit condos.
In a two-unit condo, buyers should understand how the association splits the yard, driveway, basement and big-ticket repairs, since there is rarely a management company. Arlington also has seven local historic districts, including Pleasant Street and Jason/Gray, where the Historic District Commissions review exterior changes. Some low-lying streets near Alewife Brook are worth checking against flood maps.
