Milton stretches from the Neponset River, right across from Boston's Lower Mills, up to the summit of Great Blue Hill. Much of the town's southern half sits inside or alongside the Blue Hills Reservation, so a drive down Canton Avenue passes stone walls, old estates and stretches of woods. Closer to the river, the streets around Milton Village and East Milton grew up as streetcar and railroad suburbs, with houses set a little closer together.
Milton's two main commercial pockets are Milton Village, near the Milton trolley stop on the river, and East Milton Square on Adams Street, where Manning Park sits on a deck above Route 93. The Mattapan trolley follows the Neponset with three more stops in town at Central Avenue, Valley Road and Capen Street. Trails in the Blue Hills, the Eustis Estate museum and the river path along the Neponset are where many people spend weekends.
Lot sizes in Milton vary a great deal, from compact parcels near the trolley to acre-plus properties near the reservation, so it helps to tour a few distinct sections before narrowing a search. East Milton, Milton Village and the Canton Avenue corridor can feel like different towns in terms of commute, yard and house style.

Milton homes & real estate
Milton's housing is overwhelmingly single-family. Near Milton Village and along streets off Adams Street you'll see Victorian and Colonial Revival homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s, many on modest lots. East Milton has a mix of capes, Colonials and post-war houses. Toward the Blue Hills, Canton Avenue and the streets around it hold larger shingle-style and Colonial homes on substantial lots, plus some older estate properties. Condos and townhouses exist but make up a small share of what comes to market.
With so many older homes, inspections deserve real attention to heating systems, roofs, foundations and any knob-and-tube wiring. Lots near the reservation may include wetlands or conservation restrictions that affect additions or new outbuildings. Driveways and commute routes also differ a lot between East Milton, close to Route 93, and the western side of town.
