South Boston began as Dorchester Neck, a narrow strip of land reaching into the harbor, and Boston annexed it in stages starting in 1804. Its most famous moment came in March 1776, when George Washington placed cannon on Dorchester Heights and forced the British to leave Boston. A white marble monument now marks the spot above Thomas Park, and the grid of lettered and numbered streets below it is lined with triple-deckers and rowhouses.

Broadway is the main street, running from the Red Line at Broadway station east to City Point, with West Broadway and East Broadway each carrying their own mix of shops, cafés and services. At the eastern tip, a causeway leads to Castle Island and Fort Independence, and the loop around Pleasure Bay is a favorite walk. Carson Beach, the L Street Beach and M Street Beach line the shore along Day Boulevard.

Locals often divide the neighborhood into the west side, near Andrew Square and the Red Line, and City Point on the east side near Castle Island. The Seaport on the waterfront to the north is part of South Boston too, but it uses the 02210 ZIP and is usually treated as its own neighborhood.

The Market

South Boston homes & real estate

South Boston's older housing is mostly wood-frame triple-deckers, two-families and attached rowhouses from the late 1800s and early 1900s, packed tightly along the lettered streets (running out to P Street) and the numbered East and West streets. The blocks around Thomas Park and Telegraph Hill hold some of the more ornate Victorian homes. On the west side, near Andrew Square, Dorchester Avenue and the Broadway Red Line stop, former industrial land has been rebuilt with mid-rise condo and apartment buildings. Many triple-deckers have been converted to condos, and some have been fully rebuilt.

With so many renovations and new builds, buyers should ask about permits, warranties on new construction and the quality of conversion work. Small two- and three-unit associations often run informally, so request the budget, insurance and any shared repair history. Parking is mostly on the street, and some low-lying streets near Day Boulevard and the waterfront can fall within flood zones.
